Cup Holders Knock Out In Local Round Of Upsets
Christchurch United, the current Chatham Cup holders, hopes a record eighth win in the National KO Cup has ended when they were knocked in and upset by Nomads 3 - 2. Coastal Spirit accounted for former cup holders and leaders of the Southern League - Cashmere Technical, 3 - 1. In the only time that went to form, Ferrymead Bays advanced when knocking out Universities of Canterbury (UC) 2 - 1. The final upset saw FC Nelson, from the Nelson Bays Premier League, account for Nelson Suburbs, from the Southern League - 2 - 1.
Compared to recent games Nomads probably created fewer scoring chances but made the most of them in an open first half. The home side took the lead after Christchurch United lost the ball on the halfway line which saw Nomads slip the ball to Cooper Goldsmith who raced towards the goal and received the ball back after a defender slipped when trying to clear the ball with Goldsmith's then firing a shot onto the post with the ball ricocheting back across the goal to Angus McIntyre who checked back inside a defender to score. Early in the second half a long clearance from Nomads keeper, Regan Frame found Goldsmith who raced into the area and crossed back to Flynn Holdem who ran between two defenders to bury the ball home. In the 65th minute, United's David Yoo was allowed to run unchecked into the area to pull a goal back from close range. Five minutes later Nomads restored their two-goal margin when Goldsmith provided another cross to Holdem whose first shot was half blocked with the ball falling back to Holdem who fired the ball home. With six minutes of normal time to play Nomads went down a player after Josh Holland received his second yellow card and from the resulting free-kick Joel Stevens scored directly. United created several half chances in the remaining minutes of normal time and ten minutes of added time but could not force the game into extra time.
There was also a good crowd to watch the Coastal Spirit / Cashmere Technical clash with both sides missing first-choice players, Coastal without keeper, Ellis Hare-Reid, away watch the 2024 Euro's and Technical without defender Tom Schwarz and player marker and target man, Garbhan Coughlan - away overseas for Coughlan upcoming wedding. Coastal made all of the early running against Technical and took control of the game when Jake Hale and Joe Hoole scored in two minutes to put the home side two up after 13 minutes. Hale's goal was set up by Alex Steinwascher who squared the ball to an unmarked Hale. The second came from a Mason Stearn corner, Hoole buried had a free header. Technical pulled a goal back with a quick counterattack in the 19th minute ending when Lyle Matthysen turned Meaclem before firing home from just inside the goal area. In what turned out to be the final goal, Coastal played the ball the length of the field with Hale and Liam Cotter involved near the goal with Cotter picking out Api Rabuka in front of goal who slotted the ball home in the 26th minute. With the number of chances both teams had, it was surprising that there were no further goals after the break with Paul Hughes, who is normally Coastal manager, forced to don the keeping gloves after Hare-Reid's replacement, Adam Highfield could not play as the paperwork was not completed in time to comply with the Cup 10 business day rule, and Hughes pulled to several fine saves, twice turning shots away from Aiden Barbour-Ryan away for corners, with the Technical also hitting the post once. Still, in the end, Coastal's two goal margin was too much to overcome.
On Friday evening, Ferrymead Bays and UC turned scoreless after a tight tussle in the opening half with Bays creating the better chances. Bays came out strongly after the break and took the lead when Yusaku Wasaki scored in the 55th minute. Four minutes later the in-form Nik Fairley made it 2 - 0. UC ensured that it would be a tense finish after their leading striker, Jacob Killick found the back of the net with thirteen to play but Bays denied UC any real chances to score again.
Nelson Suburbs took the lead against FC Nelson when Dauntae Mariner scored in the 18th minute, but FC would have gone to the break happy knowing they were still in the contest as they were creating chances. With 20 to play, La Ba Pan, one of several former Suburbs players in the FC side, scored with a stunning long-range strike from near halfway. Five minutes later Pan scored again with Suburbs having no answer for FC, who are unbeaten this season, going on to see out the game and claim their first Cup win against Suburbs in eight attempts.
In the four Southern Football ties Dunedin City Royals defeated Wanaka 4 - 1, Otago University edged Green Island 1 - 0, Northern needed extra time to defeat Mosgiel 5 - 4 with Roslyn Wakari accounting for Timaru's Northern Hearts 6 - 1.

Big Win For Technical
Cashmere Technical defeated Coastal Spirit SAS 6 - 0 in Round 2 of the Kate Sheppard Cup, with the scoreline the heaviest-ever defeat Coastal has sustained in the national competition without scoring a goal.
While it was not entirely one-way traffic for Cashmere Technical, they dominated the early stages with Anna Phee opening the scoring from a free kick in the tenth minute. Lily Fisher doubled the lead two minutes later when forcing the ball home from a corner. On the half hour when playing the ball out from the back Coastal Spirit turned the ball over with Kate Loye involved twice before putting Technical 3 up. Before the restart Bel Van Noorden went off injured for Coastal and eight minutes later Laura Newman also had to be replaced for the home side.
The second half was a similar pattern with Technical knocking the ball around with ease, while Coastal had to defend for long periods having limited scoring changes. In the 55th minute Emma Kench crossed the ball in from the right to Margi Dias who's first shot was blocked by keeper, Amelia Simmers, but the ball rebounded to Dias who drilled the ball home. Minutes later Aimee Phillips was brough down in the area and she was untroubled to score from the resulting penalty. Both sides cleared their benches out in the remaining minutes with Tech substitute, Lainey Altieri-Need scoring the final goal late in the game.
